Jan

Jan

In our youth
We met..
Neighbors
With children
Friends..
She a nurse
Caregiver it seemed
For all of us..
In our separations
Over the years
Her memory remained..
Kindness shining through
The shadows she endured..
Our life wish:
To experience her care
In our own dark passages..
With her arrival now
We are blessed
She is here
With her
Welcoming
Soft smile…

Jan Brickell
1934-2013

With a heavy heart we announce the loss off our beloved mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister and friend, Janet. She passed swiftly and quickly to the gates of heaven as a result of a brain aneurysm. Earth's loss is Heaven's gain as surely this classy little lady was an angel.

Jan was born May 15, 1934 in Hoven, S.D. to Elmer and Ann (MellenBach) Spindler. She was the first in her family to obtain a college degree. Upon becoming a registered nurse, she moved to Denver to begin her career. She met Will A. Brickell soon after and the two were joined in marriage, June 15, 1963.

an loved being a wife and mother to Desiree and Shawn Brickell. They moved their family to Colorado Springs in 1969 where they lived a full and rich life. Jan took great pride in her years of service as an RN at Memorial Hospital's 7 north, Orthopedic and Neurology unit. They were active members in Holy Trinity Catholic church. Upon retiring Jan continued to serve her community by serving as a Eucharistic minister to people in the MacKenzie house and to those homebound. She served once a week at the Marion House soup kitchen. She loved being a member of her Antique and movie clubs.

Jan was a remarkable woman and carried joy and sunshine wherever she went. She had a profound influence on the development of her grandchildren. She was a woman of strong faith and despite diversity she chose to live her days always positive, always nurturing, and always celebrating life. She was a true giver, full of grace, sweet, kind, a great role model, energetic, a tireless worker, and loved by all. She loved nature and she loved hiking. She took pride in her physical well-being. A hallmark of 2013 was her taking 1st place in the Women's 79 year old category of the Bolder Boulder, surpassing 2nd place by 20 minutes. She was appropriately designated by Bolder Boulder as "A Legend". Her time ranked her #5 in the "all time top 15 records" of the BB 35 year history!

She was an angel who came down to serve for 79 years and is now back in the glories of heaven with her loved ones who preceded her in death including her husband, Will, her son, Shawn, her granddaughter, Brianna Janet Wubben, her parents, her brother and 19 Brickell in-laws.

She is survived by her daughter and best friend, Desiree Wubben Brickell, her devoted son-in-law, David Wubben, her treasured grandchildren Sophia and Sam Wubben, 2 brothers, 2 sisters, 3 of the 22 Brickell in-laws and treasured friends, nieces and nephews.

Memorial Contributions may be made to The American Institute of Cancer Research, Catholic Charities and the Marion House Soup Kitchen of Colorado Springs.

Trick AND Treat

Trick AND Treat

serving as candyman
this spooky evening
an evening of Treat..
but the Trick
where is it hiding..?
it must be there
in those masks
or those sacks
because the Trick
 is the spice
 the shadows
leaves crunching
the flashlights
this magic night...!

no place to go or to get to

no place to go or to get to

this message
we most secretly
long to hear..
but we weave
in traffic lanes
beating the light..
destination delayed
is self denied..
and that pause
once arrived
becomes not then
a destination
but a hesitation
searching our map
for stop is ahead..
these are essentials
to build a life
and we forget
that hidden longing:
no place to get to..
frightening for some
but it seems
a life full and lived
spends time in
that place..
so for practice
the next stoplight
might do...!

The Web

The Web

We are no doubt
each of us
entangled..
entangled in darkness
and in light..

Suffering arrives
with the illusion
that these are
separate entanglements
or that
they are not...

the Wedding

the Wedding

the bride and groom
unseen
prepare to unite
two become one
in joyful celebration..

might we ask
what came before
this place and time..?
an earlier chapter
of everyone's story
is told with wine..

when those barrels
of water transform
one becomes two..
old Adam alone
becomes Adam with Eve
our birthing story
unfolds again..

this split for creation
a delivery dramatic
all with accompanying
complaint and pain..
stands now a
Cana reminder
of our separation
with some news
of joy's return...

The Saints

The Saints

Named from those
many yesterdays..
A teacher or friend
ancient or recent
near or far away..
A passage we read
way back then..
Tender advice in
a time of hurt..
A homeless man's
most grateful eye..
A science truth
 grasped just now..
All remembered
this day..
The many words
spoken or not
built our vessels
 to catch new light..
Creating each
unique identity...
